Background    
     
    OSCE Missions and Field Activities are the front line of OSCE work in countries that require assistance and are the agent through which political decisions are translated into action. The OSCE Mission to Skopje is the Organization's longest-serving field mission. Based on the mandated priorities for the Mission, the Mission’s current activities are grouped in four main strategic areas:  Inter-ethnic relations, including early warning; Rule of Law, Democratic Governance; and Transnational Threats.
     
Tasks and Responsibilities    
     
   

Under the direct supervision of the National Executive Officer, the incumbent provides translation/interpretation services from local languages into English and vice-versa, as well as administrative and other services as requested by the Office of the Head of Mission, Heads of Departments and Chiefs of Units in the Mission. More specifically, the incumbent:

  1. Is responsible for the written translation of texts and documents on various subjects and for different departments of the Mission. This includes but is not limited to: laws, decrees, court documents, verdicts, warrants, forms, press articles, documents on religious matters, administrative instructions, incoming and outgoing official and informal communication, technical instructions, and other that are relevant to the work of the Mission from English into local languages and vice versa.
  2. Provides consecutive interpretation from English into local languages and vice versa, as requested by interlocutors in meetings, trainings, seminars and press conferences, inclusive of meetings with high officials and interprets at high level meetings, for officials or delegations visiting the Mission.
  3. Accompanies HOM, DHOM and/or other officers in the Mission, primarily senior managers, to provide interpretation during meetings, ministerial meetings, roundtable meetings, press conferences, seminars and field visits, and prepares reports on those events as required.
  4. On request, prepares press digests and summaries of articles from local daily papers, magazines and periodicals and online media which refer to the Mission activities or are relevant to the Mission and delivers media briefings to Senior Management; replaces the Senior Public Information and Media Assistants when needed.
  5. Drafts correspondence in English as required by National Executive Officer on the basis of instruction received and/or on the basis of own knowledge of the work; prepares summaries of relevant documents; provides language council and proof-reading to other Mission Members.
  6. Assists the supervisor in all duties and all areas such as arranging meetings, drafting  correspondence, reports, forms and other documentation, as required by the Office of the Head of Mission; researches information and background documentation and replaces the National Executive Officer and the Senior Secretary.
  7. Performs other related work as assigned. 

 

     
Necessary Qualifications    
     
   
  • Secondary education supplemented by formal training/studies in translation/interpretation;
  • A minimum of four (4) years of experience in providing translation and/or language interpreting skills;
  • Court Translator Certification in English to/from Macedonian would be considered an asset;
  • Computer literate with practical experience with Microsoft applications;
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in English and in local languages;
  • Ability to work with people of different nationalities, religions and cultural backgrounds;
  • Demonstrated gender awareness and sensitivity, and an ability to integrate a gender perspective into tasks and activities.

Remuneration Package    
     
   

* Please note that the post title and grade is subject to approval of the OSCE Unified Budget for 2019.

Monthly remuneration, subject to social security deductions, is approximately EUR 1,360.41.

Social benefits will include participation in the Cigna medical insurance and the OSCE Provident Fund.

Appointments are normally made at step 1 of the applicable OSCE salary scale. At the discretion of the appointing authority a higher step may be approved up to a maximum of step 3 subject to specific conditions.
